MAKE A PLAN

After a major disaster, it is unlikely that emergency response services will be available immediately. The following steps will help you be prepared to take care of yourself and your family during any emergency.


  • Designate an out-of-state contact person.
    Provide this person with necessary information and inform others to contact them in an emergency.
  • Duplicate important documents, photographs, etc and store these items off-site.
  • Make your home safe.
    Identify and fix any potential hazards.
  • Make a household/family/neighborhood plan.
    Set up two off-site meeting locations for family.

  • Put together a disaster supply kit and go-bag for each household member. Listed below are some suggested items to include. Store these in a safe place that is easy to get to.
  • 7-day supply of water
    (one gallon per person/pet per day)
    and food that won’t spoil

  • Essential medications and spare eye glasses

  • Flashlight and extra batteries
    (4 D, 4 C and 4 AA)

  • First aid kit

  • 1 gallon of UNSCENTED chlorine bleach to purify water (If water is clear use 2 drops per quart or 8 drops per gallon. If water is cloudy, use 4 drops per quart or 16 drops per gallon.)

  • Heavy clothing and boots or heavy shoes Have one complete change of clothing per family member and store sealed against moisture. Include towels and rain gear if possible.

  • AM/FM portable radio Crank radio

  • Fire extinguisher

  • SUGGESTED TOOLS
  • Hammer
  • Utility shut-off wrench
  • Shovel
  • Rope
  • Duct tape
  • Masking tape
  • Work gloves
  • Dust mask(s)
  • Crowbar

  • COOKING / EATING UTENSILS
  • Camp stove and extra fuel
  • Cook kit or pots
  • Manual can opener
  • Paper plates, cups for hot items and spoons
  • Large, heavy plastic garbage bags
  • Aluminum foil
  • Zip-lock bags
  • Paper towels
  • Waterproof matches
  • Pet supplies as needed (1 gallon water per day per pet)

  • CAMPING SUPPLIES
  • Sleeping bags (1 per family member)
  • Tent(s) and/or Tarp(s)
  • Space blanket

  • MONEY (small bills and coins)

  • FOOD One weeks supply. Foods you don’t have to heat.

    • DRY FOOD
    • Dried Fruit
    • Crackers
    • Powdered milk
    • Granola bars

    • CANNED GOODS
    • Fruits
    • Beans
    • Fish (tuna and shrimp)
    • Chicken
    • Evaporated milk
    • Stews
    • Soups
    • Peanut butter
    • Add-water camping meals

  • SANITATION
  • 5 gallon bucket with cover (line with a plastic garbage bag and fill with 4-6” of kitty litter to use as a toilet)
  • Personal hygiene items
